I sure didn't see this one coming, but apparently someone thinks a Donnie Darko sequel is a good idea. Don't get me wrong. I loved Richard Kelly's film, but let's face it - it was by no means a box office success at the time of its release. I guess the DVD sales have been kicking some serious ass.
Moving along, UK-based sales company Velvet Octopus will be launching sales in Cannes for S. Darko. Fox has already taken North American rights. Daviegh Chase will reprise her role as Donnie's younger sister.
Other cast members will include Ed Westwick (Son Of Rambow, Gossip Girl), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2) and Justin Chatwin (Dragon Ball).
Los Angeles-based Chris Fisher, who previously made Nightstalker and Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, will direct. The budget is in the $10 million range.
Producers have talked to Richard Kelly about the next chapter but he is not involved in any official capacity at this point.
No word whether or not this will be a theatrical or direct-to-dvd release, but my money's on the latter.
